Kuta
Your complete guide to living and staying in Kuta, Bali.
Overview
Kuta is Bali's original tourist hub, stretching along a wide sandy beach just minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport. It was the first area to be developed for tourism and remains the most budget-friendly and accessible part of the island.
Vibe
Busy, loud, and unapologetically touristy. Kuta is where backpackers, budget travellers, and package tourists converge. It lacks the polish of Seminyak or the cool factor of Canggu, but it delivers affordable accommodation, easy access, and a long stretch of beach.
Best For
Budget travellers, first-time visitors, surfers learning on gentle waves, and anyone who wants to be close to the airport. Also convenient as a base for day trips to Ubud, Uluwatu, or the Gili Islands.
Average Costs
Monthly rentals range from 6-12M IDR (~$380-750), the most affordable area in south Bali. Street food and local warungs are very cheap (15-30K IDR per meal). Budget hotels and hostels are plentiful.
Top Spots
Kuta Beach for sunset and beginner surfing, Waterbom Bali water park (great for families), Beachwalk Shopping Centre, and the memorials at Ground Zero. Discovery Mall and the surrounding streets have plenty of shops and restaurants.
Getting Around
Kuta is relatively compact and parts are walkable, though traffic is notoriously bad. Motorbikes, Grab, and GoJek are the best options. The airport is only 10-15 minutes away, making it convenient for arrivals and departures.
