Nusa Penida

Your complete guide to living and staying in Nusa Penida, Bali.

Overview

Nusa Penida is a rugged island off the southeast coast of Bali, known for its dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, and raw natural beauty. It is larger than most visitors expect and significantly less developed than mainland Bali. Most people visit on day trips from Sanur, but staying overnight reveals a quieter, more authentic side.

Vibe

Adventurous, wild, and unspoiled. Nusa Penida feels like Bali did decades ago: limited infrastructure, unpaved roads, and jaw-dropping scenery around every corner. It attracts adventurous travellers, divers, and photographers.

Best For

Adventure seekers, photographers, divers, and snorkellers. The island is home to Manta Point (manta ray encounters), Kelingking Beach (the famous T-Rex cliff), and Crystal Bay. Not recommended for those who need reliable infrastructure or luxury.

Average Costs

Accommodation is basic and affordable, 300-800K IDR per night for guesthouses. Dining is limited to simple warungs and a few cafes. Day trip tours from Bali cost 500-800K IDR including boat, transport, and lunch.

Top Spots

Kelingking Beach (the iconic cliff viewpoint), Angel's Billabong, Broken Beach, Crystal Bay for snorkelling, and Manta Point for diving with manta rays. Atuh Beach on the east side is stunning and less visited.

Getting Around

Roads are rough and often unpaved, so a sturdy motorbike or a hired car with driver is essential. The island is larger than expected, so plan your time carefully. Fast boats from Sanur take about 30-45 minutes.
