KITAS (Temporary Stay Permit)

A temporary residency permit for those working, retiring, or married to an Indonesian citizen.

Overview

KITAS stands for Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas (Temporary Stay Permit), which allows you to live in Indonesia for 1-2 years. It is required for anyone who wants to work legally, retire, study, or live with an Indonesian spouse. The application process is more involved than a tourist visa and typically requires a sponsor, whether that is an employer, a retirement agent, or a spouse. A KITAS gives you access to benefits like opening a local bank account and getting a local phone number registered in your name.

Duration

1-2 years depending on type. Renewable. After several renewals, you may be eligible for KITAP (permanent stay permit).

Cost

Varies widely: $1,000-3,000+ depending on type, agent fees, and whether your employer covers costs. Retirement KITAS agents typically charge $1,500-2,500 including all fees.

Requirements

  • Passport valid for at least 18 months
  • Sponsor (employer with RPTKA approval, spouse, or retirement agent)
  • Completed application form (typically handled by sponsor or agent)
  • Passport-sized photos (various backgrounds required)
  • Health certificate or medical check-up results
  • Police clearance from your home country (for some types)
  • Proof of income or savings (retirement KITAS: ~$1,500/month minimum)
  • Marriage certificate (spouse KITAS)

Step-by-Step Process

  1. 1

Identify the KITAS type you need: work, retirement, spouse, or student.

  2. 2

Engage a sponsor: your employer, a retirement agency, or your Indonesian spouse.

  3. 3

Your sponsor applies to the Directorate General of Immigration on your behalf.

  4. 4

Submit all required documents and biometric data.

  5. 5

Receive a telex approval (approval letter sent to the Indonesian embassy or immigration).

  6. 6

If applying from abroad, collect your KITAS visa at an Indonesian embassy. If already in Indonesia, convert at a local immigration office.

  7. 7

Upon arrival or conversion, complete biometric registration and receive your KITAS card.

  8. 8

Register with local authorities (RT/RW) within 14 days of receiving KITAS.

Tips

  • Start the process 2-3 months before you need the KITAS. It is not fast.
  • A reputable agent or immigration consultant is almost essential for the paperwork.
  • Work KITAS holders must also obtain an IMTA (work permit) through their employer.
  • Retirement KITAS requires you to hire an Indonesian helper and have health insurance.
  • Your KITAS is tied to your sponsor. Changing jobs means applying for a new KITAS.

Important Notes

  • Working without a valid work KITAS is illegal and can result in deportation.
  • KITAS holders must report to immigration annually and carry their KITAS card at all times.
  • Overstaying a KITAS has serious consequences including fines, detention, and a re-entry ban.
  • Retirement KITAS holders are not permitted to work or earn income in Indonesia.
